As you may or may not have noticed, there've not been any new strips for a good couple of weeks now. This is due to some unpleasantness in my personal life and the pressures exerted upon a workshy bumbler who wakes up one morning and suddenly realises he's got less than two months to save his degree. It's not an excuse, and it's not professional, but it's a reason.

Very Small Monsters is not working this way. Things have to change. If nothing else, I need to get a presentable website going, but it's mostly in the way the strips are made. A lot of work needs to be done in almost no time, and I'm not planning on updating this blog until I'm happy with the comic again.

In the meantime, have a shufti at the works of STEE-3PO and Shakino, two co-exhibitors at the London thing earlier this month. They're really good.

Lifestyle Choices, Part 7

That's about it for the Lifestyle Choices story, I think.

As you may have guessed by the banner above today's strip, I'll be exhibiting a selection of delicious things at the UK Web and Minicomix Thing on March 11th in London; sharing the table will be the excellent STEE-3PO, the absurdly talented Lucy Parnell and the master robot and animal builder Stu Witter. We'll also be touting some amazing models and illustrations by a load of Lincoln-based artists that you should definitely come and have a gander at.

After this weekend, I'm planning on some interesting new things for Very Small Monsters. I'll likely be switching to a Mon-Wed-Fri schedule, because these New Things will probably involve a considerably bolstered time investment on my part; it may drop to as little as twice-weekly, but never less than that. You have my word as a scholar and a gentleman.*

I've got to put some material together for the Thing, I suppose. See you Monday!

*This word is rendered null and void in cases of terrifying illness or Having Loads Of Stuff To Do, but I will do my best.

Oh dear, first missed update less than a fortnight in! That's not a precedent I want to be setting, really, but for now, Very Small Monsters is likely to be updating on alternate days while I get on with other stuff. Sorry about that, normal service will be resumed soonish.

Exciting times ahead, though! Something approaching a portfolio site should be done by the end of this week to tie in with some other fun projects - including a pretty different direction for Very Small Monsters here. More comics for everyone's a good thing, I reckon.

An unoptimised version of my adaptation of The Secret Life of Walter Mitty is up here; it's currently textless, so you should probably read the original story by James Thurber (if you haven't already). The comic itself's an early attempt at utilising this Infinite Canvas business so beloved of that McCloud fella and his ilk; I think it went pretty well, but I'd like to hear some constructive criticism if you've got some. But beware! The comic is pretty dang big - somewhere just north of the 2Mb mark - and so not a friend to the dial-up user (a more streamlined version will appear on my portfolio site when it's eventually ready to go).

Right, I've got a dissertation to write. See you tomorrow!

MONSTER FACT: In the center of the head of many lizards is a small semi-transparent spot, which connects to an area of the brain, called the pineal body. A pineal body is a small, cone-shaped projection from the top of the midbrain of most vertebrates. The pineal body does not appear in crocodiles or in mammals of the order Xenarthra (anteaters, sloths, armadillos) and consists of only a few cells in whales and elephants. In humans the structure develops until the seventh year, when it is slightly larger than a pea. In lizards, this "third eye" is thought to detect day length, triggering the production of hormones for breeding in spring and hibernation in the winter. Thank you, Colzoo.org, for making lizards a little odder in my mind.
